The tribute concert in honour of Oliver Mtukudzi at Warehouse was a huge success. The event saw a number of fans flock to Warehouse to celebrate the legend of the African music scene.
Some of the artists who performed at the show were Zimbabwean singer Slickartie. Slickartie who is based in Namibia had a very emotional and powerful performance that had the crowd on their feet during his set. Jackson Wahengo also gave the fans a performance they won’t forget anytime soon. Wahengo had a beautiful performance of Mtukudzi’s Born in the Ghetto, many of the fans sang along as Wahengo entertained them. Another highlight of the concert was when Elemotho also gave a heartfelt performance in honour of Mtukudzi. Fans were ululating and screaming for Elemotho as he performed.
Over 500 spectators showed up at the tribute concert.
Mtukudzi died aged 66 of complications from diabetes. An iconic songwriter, he recorded an impressive 67 albums. He also wrote the music for, and starred in,Jit in 1990, the first feature film with an all-Zimbabwean cast, and then the massively popular film Neria in 1993. Mtuzudzi was a goodwill ambassador for the UN children’s fund.
He is survived by his wife, Daisy, and by five children and two grandchildren.
