Kayemele: Comic relief from the North

By Emilie Shimbali

The newest addition to the Namibian comedy scene is Shinana Gorge known as Kayemele who hails from Onayena which is in the Northern part of the country. Kayemele started doing mainstream comedy last year and his mirthful humorous short stories, showcases his comedy range that blends the grim with amiable jokes.

“I know the formula for funny. You know, some days I wake up to speaking like Exit, while some I speak exactly like King Tee Dee, Mos Ondonga opo tayikala!!!! ( Ondonga has to be there),” Kayemele said.

When he was growing up, he adored comedy but assumed it was just his natural talent and it would not be welcomed that much unlike someone doing music or other art forms. When he was younger, he rarely saw native comedians like his own represented on screen. But due to his now 35 000 followers Facebook and after two of his short stories ( Napa kale inapaliwa and Ondonga opo tayikala) went viral, he saw an opportunity during the pandemic to elevate and showcase more of what he can do.

Kayemele told Unwrap that he started doing jokes in short drama’s at school. ” I used to tell my group mates not to prepare whenever we had a drama the following day. I just tell them to follow my lead and eventually we just nail it in two minutes and get excellent,” he said.

Currently, Kayemele has partnered with Win fast Namibia where he markets their tickets on various media outlets. He is also spotlighting fellow up-and-coming comics so they work together. “ I am also thankful for the support I get from my listeners and I hope to entertain their events,” said Kayemele.

He said his latest collection include Kadhila Amoomo and Sisa Namandje video but that is as much as he wants to reveal.
