From movie theatres to music, nothing compares to being surrounded by sound from all directions immersing you into the moment. This, however, takes mix engineers with great techniques to create an immersive sound experience.

The fourth session of the Dolby Audio Webinars offered by MultiChoice Talent Factory in partnership with Dolby Institute covered aspects of setting up a 5.1 surround sound mix environment. This included mixing techniques and effects needed to start working in surround sound.
Hosted by industry professionals from Dolby Labs, Vikram Joglekar and Quinton Schmid, the hour-long online session placed emphasis on the entire process from script to post-production. According to Schmid, it is important that mixers carry on thinking of sound through all stages of production and post-production to ensure coherence.
Schmid also urged mix engineers to invest in speakers. A 5.1 set up requires five identical speakers and a subwoofer for base management. Explaining how to set up speakers Schmid said that mixers have to bear continuity in mind and ensure that all speakers are equidistant to the mixing position while maintaining the same frequency distance.
The online session further highlighted aspects of audio workstation support for surround bussing, location dialogue and effects, front and back balance of elements, deliverables and input and output settings amongst others.
The Dolby Audio Webinars is a series of eight webinars geared towards all content creators, mix engineers, video editors and system integrators.
